Israel Makes Historic Trump Decision to Ensure His Legacy Lives on Long After Presidency

President Donald Trump’s historic decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel has met with plenty of plaudits within the Jewish state.

Now, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has made a historic move to make sure the legacy of that decision lives on after Trump’s presidency.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Israeli Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz announced Wednesday that a new train station that will be built in close proximity to Jerusalem’s Western Wall will be named after President Trump.

“The Western Wall is the holiest place for the Jewish people, and I decided to name the train station that leads to it after President Trump — following his historic and brave decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel,” Katz said in a statement.

The station is part of a plan announced by Katz to extend Israel’s new high-speed rail line farther into downtown Jerusalem by digging a two-mile tunnel under the capital’s Old City, according to ABC News.

The plan would include two new underground stations.

“Some 11 million Jews and tourists from the entire (world) visit the Kotel (Western Wall) annually,” Katz said Wednesday. “According to the plan, two underground stations will be built — each at a depth of 52 meters,”

The extension would take the high-speed rail line all the way from Tel Aviv to the Western Wall, where it would meet its terminus at the station named for Trump.

However, because of where the route runs — under a site known as the Temple Mount to the Jews and the Noble Sanctuary to Muslims — the plan is expected to run into opposition from the Muslim world in general and Palestinians in particular.

Transportation Ministry spokesman Avner Ovadia says the plan would take four years to complete at a cost of $700 million.

Katz stated that he views the plan to extend the line as the top national infrastructure priority and has ordered officials at the Transportation Ministry to treat it as such.

That’s pretty big news in and of itself, particularly given that a station is being named for President Trump. However, whom the terminus is being named for may not even be as important as who is doing the naming.

While not a name known to many in the United States, even those who follow the Jewish state closely, Yisrael Katz is a key figure in Israeli politics. In addition to being the transportation minister, Katz is also Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s intelligence minister and is widely viewed as Netanyahu’s eventual replacement atop the conservative Likud party.

Thus, not only could the decision be seen as a tip of the hat to Trump for his move on Jerusalem, it could also be construed as a wider vote of confidence within Likud for the president.

Either way, not a bad “thank you” for a move that should have happened years ago — and one that ensures Trump’s legacy is safe in Israel.
