President Donald Trump’s White House spoke out on Monday to put the DACA program’s fate squarely on congressional Democrats, saying that so-called “DREAMers” should take out their frustrations on lawmakers.
Daily Mail reported that when White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked what she would say to the DREAMers, illegal aliens who were brought here as children, she defiantly told reporters that “they should storm Capitol Hill and protest there.”
The fate of DACA became embroiled in Friday’s shutdown when the program’s survival must be attached to any funding bill that would keep the government’s lights on. However, Democrats gave up on Monday after Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pledged to bring the issue up for a vote by February 8.
Sanders slammed Democrats on Monday, saying they “held up” discussion about DACA, which gives at least 700,000 people a guarantee they won’t be deported unless they commit crimes.
“Democrats are the one that shut this discussion down by forcing a shutdown, by being unwilling to fund the government,” she insisted.
Sanders added that DREAMers are afraid because of a “failure to actually address the issue” on Capitol Hill.
“They’re the ones that actually pass and make those laws,’ she said of Congress. “And the president gave a six-month timeframe in order for them to do that. And now I think all of America is counting on them to show up and make sure that happens.”
Sanders said that Trump is very happy about what happened on Monday, adding that he was “pleased that Democrats in Congress have come to their senses” so that they can now work toward “solving the problem of very unfair illegal immigration.”
She also said that Trump deserved credit for the end of the standoff because he stood “firm” while Democrats took a position that “frankly was indefensible” and had to back off from it.
“What the president did clearly worked,” she said.
